Why Is Your Electrical Panel Buzzing? 5 Possible Culprits

If you notice buzzing in your electrical panel equipment, that sound can point to one of several potential electrical issues. An overloaded circuit, loose connection, failing breaker, electrical arcing, or an aging panel can all create unusual buzzing noises.

The good news is that hearing buzzing sounds doesn’t always mean that you need to completely replace your electrical panel. But it does mean that it may be worth scheduling a professional inspection.

At New London Electric, we’ve been working with electrical panels all throughout Southern Chester County, PA, and Northern Delaware for decades. So, if you’re dealing with electrical panel buzzing, our expert guide is here to help.

Is It Normal for an Electrical Panel to Make Noise?

Your electrical panel is responsible for distributing power all throughout your property, and when operating normally, some electrical components can produce a faint hum. In fact, a quiet, consistent hum that has always been present is sometimes completely normal and doesn’t necessarily mean there is a problem.

However, suddenly noticing louder buzzing, crackling, sizzling, or any other new sounds is different. Though it may be difficult to diagnose what has changed by yourself, any sudden change like this is almost certainly a sign that something isn’t working quite right and that your electrical panel may need to be upgraded.

What Are 5 Possible Causes of Buzzing in Your Electrical Panel?

Several electrical problems can produce similar noises, which makes seeking out a professional diagnosis essential. That being said, knowing more about what might be causing the problem can still be useful. Here are some of the most likely culprits when it comes to electrical panel buzzing.

1. An Overloaded Circuit

An overloaded circuit is one potential cause of hearing buzzing in your electrical panel equipment. Each individual circuit in your electrical panel is designed to carry a specific electrical load, and if the electrical demand exceeds what the circuit or its components are designed to handle, it can lead to buzzing sounds and further electrical issues.

This is usually the case if you notice that you start hearing the sound when a high-demand appliance or piece of equipment turns on. Air conditioning systems, electric dryers, ovens, and other large appliances can all place a ton of extra demand on a circuit, causing buzzing sounds, tripped breakers, and more.

2. A Loose Electrical Connection

Connections within an electrical panel need to be secure so electricity can travel properly through the system. When a connection becomes loose, electrical resistance and heat can develop, which, in some cases, can cause unusual buzzing, crackling, or sizzling sounds.

Loose connections are one reason buzzing in electrical panel equipment should be diagnosed by a certified electrician rather than treated as a DIY project. Finding the loose connection and fixing it safely is not recommended without proper training. But if a loose connection is what’s causing the problem, it will be a quick and easy fix for a professional.

3. A Failing Circuit Breaker

Circuit breakers are designed to interrupt electrical flow when specific problems occur, but breakers aren’t designed to last forever and can wear out and become damaged over time. Whether the breaker is failing due to age, improper seating, or experiencing some other internal problem, all of these issues often produce buzzing sounds as a result.

If it is a failing breaker causing the problem, there will most likely be plenty of other signs you can’t ignore, including repeated breaker trips or noticing that the noise only becomes audible when your AC or some other large appliance turns on. But regardless of what issues you’re experiencing, our team can tell you whether you need to replace your panel or only need a small repair.

4. Electrical Arcing

Electrical arcing occurs when electricity jumps across a gap rather than traveling through its intended connection. This usually happens around damaged or loose electrical components that create some sort of gap for the electricity to jump from and can easily create audible buzzing, crackling, or sizzling sounds that seem to start out of nowhere.

This is one of the more dire electrical problems that you can have, as arcing can produce a lot of heat and increase your risk of electrical fires. So, if you notice that the buzzing sounds in your electrical panel come along with a burning odor or any dark discoloration, you should contact a professional electrician immediately.

5. An Aging or Overworked Electrical Panel

Just like the individual circuit breakers inside them, older electrical panels were often installed when homes used far fewer electrical devices and high-demand appliances. This worked fine back then, but as electrical demand has increased with time, older or undersized panels often have a lot of trouble supporting the increased power draw your home now requires.

Age alone doesn’t necessarily mean your panel needs to be replaced, and buzzing doesn’t always mean you need an upgrade either. But any sudden change in how your electrical system functions throughout the day is something that you should pay attention to and may make scheduling a quick professional inspection well worth it.

Can a Buzzing Electrical Panel Mean You Need an Upgrade?

In short, the answer here is that it completely depends on what the issue is. If it’s just a problem that is isolated to one breaker or connection, a simple repair is probably all you need to make that electrical panel buzzing go away.

If a professional inspection finds that the panel has inadequate electrical capacity, aging equipment, damaged components, or broader panel problems, an electrical panel upgrade is almost certainly the better long-term option.
